AmI concept in ASK-IT

  • AmI is a concept used where intelligence pervasively exists in the surrounding environment. Such an environment is sensitive to the presence and activities of people in it. AmI is the overall environment of which devices, applications, services and their interfaces may form part, as well as the networks, sensor system and other technologies that enable it.
  • AmI Space can be seen as the integration of all these functionalities across various AmI environments, seamlessly , at local and at the cyberspace level ISTAG: Strategic Orientations and Priorities for IST in FP6 (2003).

Objective

To develop an Enhanced Ambient Intelligence Space for the integration of functions and services for Mobility Impaired Users across various environments, enabling the direct natural and intuitive dialog of the users with applications and services, and enabling knowledge and content organisation and processing

Approach

The ASK-IT Enhanced AmI Space contains applications and services to actively support mobility impaired people in achieving specific tasks using a variety of interaction devices and taking users' preferences and profiles in account in relation to actual situations.

Implementation

ASK-IT AmI system will be able to:

  • Interact with the user: using more natural interfaces like speech, touch and gestures
  • Model the user behaviour: build users' preferences from his/her past interactions and eventually abstract the user profile to more general community profiles
  • Model the environment and sensors available to perceive it and to take care of the world model
  • Control security aspects to ensure the privacy and security of the personal data and deal with authorisation, key and rights management
  • Ensure the quality of services as perceived by the user (seamless service provision, mobile devices independent)
  • Ensure service interoperability and ability to be provided through any mobile device of adequate technical characteristics

ASK-IT agents types

  • ASK-IT personal wearable intelligent device agent (PEDA): formulating the user requests and sending them to the ASK-IT E&D Assistant agent (EDA), that requests services from local Provider agents
  • Provider agents: location-based and trip planning operations, provide the tools and content for all realised services
  • Middle agents: unique contact point for the platform through the internet
  • Service agents: serve MI users (e.g. trip planning for people on wheelchair, showing accessible POIs around the user, etc).
  • ASK-IT E&D assistant agents (EDA)

Mobile devices applications

  • Develop a personal device, based on intelligent mobile phones and PDAs, able to configure itself according to the specific needs of the person

  • They encapsulate all accessibility features together, orchestrated concurrently during runtime, enabling users with varying disabilities to directly use the system
